Moshé Uzan: Preservation of the Tunisian Jewish Archives

April 29, 2026

Moshé Uzan, Deputy Chief Rabbi of Tunisia, leads a professional archival mission to rescue over 200,000 documents reflecting the nation's Jewish heritage. The collection spans from the 17th century to records of the French protectorate, featuring diverse items like marriage certificates, debt acknowledgments, and community newspapers. A key focus is preserving Judeo-Arabic and the "Lemaalek" script, which are increasingly rare to decipher. Supported by a mostly Muslim team and a scientific committee, the project aims to counter racism through historical transparency and digital accessibility.
